This subsystem allows
system users to integrate digital terrain data and enables the graphical
visualization of GIS data as it relates to the Radio Station Licensing,
Technical Analysis, Spectrum Surveillance, and Coordination / Notification
subsystems of AFMS. The GIS subsystem performs three (3) main support
functions: data entry, EMC calculation, and visualization.
GIS supports the radio
station license application, coordination and notification data entry
process by automatically deriving radio station attributes based on the
location (coordinates) of the radio station. Examples of location-based
attributes include, radio climatic zone, rain climatic zone, etc. EMC
calculations consider digital terrain models, such as the terrain intrusion
in the signal path. Finally, GIS provides a visualization capability that
includes the ability to situate radio stations against a map background,
compare terrain profiles between two radio stations, and view coverage
and antenna radiation patterns.
